Ukiyo-e Workshop (Woodblock Print Experience)
Discover the timeless art of Japanese woodblock printing in this hands-on workshop, where you'll learn the techniques used by legendary masters like Kuniyoshi, Hiroshige, and Hokusai, the creator of The Great Wave from Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. Immerse yourself in the intricate craft that has shaped centuries of Japanese art and culture.
Guiding you through this experience is renowned artist Kurumi Wakaki, whose unique approach to printmaking has earned her prestigious accolades such as the Kyoto City New Artist Award (2021), the Kobe Rokko Meets Art Grand Prize (2013), and the 12th Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art (2009). With a career rooted in both traditional and contemporary techniques, Wakaki’s work spans across woodblock printing and performance art, making her the perfect mentor for both beginners and experienced artists alike. Wakaki’s work is an exploration of the delicate balance between image and reflection, carving and creation. As you carve your block, apply the ink, and press the paper, you’ll experience the thrill of revealing your own design—a moment deeply tied to the joy that printmakers have felt for centuries.
Wakaki herself has continually pushed the boundaries of what printmaking can be, from examining the relationships between surfaces to innovating with the act of 'transference,' all while maintaining a deep respect for tradition.
This workshop offers not just a chance to learn, but to rediscover the joy and beauty of printmaking—an art form that allows you to express creativity through each delicate press of the paper. Whether you're an art enthusiast or curious about Japanese traditions, this experience will connect you to the rich history of Japanese woodblock printing while letting you create something uniquely your own.
